Grand Prix BBQ
This annual social event was held in Bicester on 16th July, the Sunday of the F1 race. A baker’s dozen of us assembled at around midday, and Jackie opened the proceedings by going round and organising the sweepstake of the drivers. I then followed this by flashing up the barbecue and cooking a batch of sausages and onions for a hot-dog starter before the race began. The lads (apart from Phil, who drives a 29 year old Audi 80 and therefore has no great interest in cars!) retired to watch the race whilst the girls sat on the terrace with brimming glasses and put the world to rights.
The race was exciting, and the noise from the lounge when the two Ferraris suffered punctures in the closing stages must have made the neighbours jump if they weren’t also watching!! A great race, with a great result.
After the race I again flashed up the barbie, and cooked the traditional favourites – burgers, chicken satay, chinese chicken, pork steaks in a hot Korean marinade, and pork with honey and mustard marinade – with veggie options, naturally. The girls had excelled themselves with the most mouth-watering puddings – trifle, pavlova and lemon cheesecake, and a cheese board after. Fully replete, we sat chatting on the terrace, willing the rain (which had spitted intermittently) to stay away, which it did, thankfully, until the evening.
Once again this event proved to be one of the most enjoyable and one of the most sociable in our calendar, so it is surprising that it isn’t even better attended. And the result of the sweepstake? Jill Mansfield had drawn Lewis Hamilton, Jackie Bennett was second with Valtteri Bottas and I had drawn Raikkonen for third place! A good result for the Bennetts!
