Rescheduled Spring Run 2019
The day chosen for the rescheduled Spring Run was a complete contrast to the original one – lots of sun, and warmth too! We met up for a breakfast sandwich at the Lion; numbers compared with the original date were down – not surprising since many members had prior commitments, and it was a bank holiday weekend. However, we managed to muster 6 cars (including Mary’s smart new Audi convertible).
We set off after breakfast, and because we had been reminded to bring cameras along in order to compete for a photo prize to be awarded for the best image taken along the route, we were soon leapfrogging one another as various carloads stopped to take pictures at the many opportunities en route. Despite having a detailed Tulip Roadbook to guide us, one or two cars made a wrong turning or two, but nevertheless almost everyone made it to the King William pub for a drink – (wonderful Brakspear’s bitter straight from the wood – how often can you enjoy that nowadays?). There were a couple of dramas during the run – Peter Mansfield came upon an unjustifiably irate cyclist – who thought he owned the road – in a long one-way roadwork section, and who proceeded to kick Peter’s car on his way past – fortunately just leaving some smears of rubber which will polish off, and Kurt picked up a nail in his front tyre, which had to be remedied by application of the emergency repair kit of goo and pump, so he and son Jason sensibly decided to go straight to Nuffield Place.
At Nuffield Place our contact, Rosy Pugh, was on hand to welcome us and to park us up in front of the house, where the cars were greatly admired by the other visitors to the property, with the usual comments such as ‘I had one of those in the 70’s’ and ‘I did my courting in one of these’. Picnics were unpacked, and we enjoyed a sociable lunch together before exploring the house (which was formerly the property of William Richard Morris, the motor tycoon), the gift shop and the gardens.
Then it was time to leave, and a very pleasant drive home in the afternoon sunshine. A thoroughly enjoyable day. Watch this space for the results of the photo competition, which will be judged soon!
